The E.P. Carrillo Edicion Inaugural Encore is a new blend produced by cigar maker, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, who earned fame from his La Gloria Cubana brand. Perez-Carrillo, who left Swedish Match AB (owner of the La Gloria Cubana name) to pursue a business with son, Ernesto III and daughter Lisette, started the EPC Cigar Company in 2009. The E.P. Carrillo Inaugural is the first cigar the company has produced and are available in beautiful mahogany boxes of 10, priced at $13.00 a piece ($130.00 a box). Ernesto III states, “The plan is to do one limited edition per year.”

Sometimes we are blessed with the opportunity to marvel at a wonderful man made product. The pre-light experience on the E.P. Carrillo Encore is one of those moments. The wrapper on this cigar is a superb golden brown with light veins. The cap is a perfect triple seam, which is more typical on Cuban cigars, and scents of sweet tobacco/barnyard were present in the smell. The band is an elaborate red, yellow, and black with gold lettering and tobacco leaves printed on it. The second band is red with gold lettering that identified the cigar as the “Edicion Inaugural 2009.” The only trouble during the pre-light category was the actual lighting of the cigar. It just didn’t want to be smoked.
Pre-light Score: 9 pts.
The E.P. Carrillo Encore started out medium to full bodied but quickly defined itself as medium. The cigar produced lots of creamy white smoke with aromas that tingled my sinuses. The taste profile showed hints of hay and a touch of honey that was very toasty.
The ash on the cigar was a solid white and the burn was consistently uneven and lopsided. Into the second third, the cigar’s profile changed keeping the creaminess however bringing notes of butter and nutty flavors to the palate.
Again on the final third of the E.P. Carrillo Encore the flavors changed into a spicy leather character that led to a hot, somewhat sour finish.
Smoking Score: 8 pts.
My overall impression of the E.P. Carrillo Edicion Inaugural Encore is a good one. For the consistency and complexity experienced with this cigar, the money is worth it. In fact I suggest getting a box if possible. With production being limited this will be a shark of a cigar to find in a couple of years.
Overall Experience: 8 pts.
